A Ukrainian from Wiesbaden: Pavlo Skoropadskyj and Ukrainian Diaspora in Germany and Europe.

On 16 May 2026, from 11:00 to 16:00, we warmly invite you to join us in Wiesbaden for the public conference:

“A Ukrainian from Wiesbaden: Pavlo Skoropadskyj and Ukrainian Diaspora in Germany and Europe.”

The event is organised in cooperation between Dialogkraft Europa e.V. (Frankfurt am Main) and the Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky Historical Society at Dunstan Zentrum Wiesbaden.

This conference is conceived as an open educational and dialogue-oriented event with a regional focus on the Rhine-Main area.

We welcome all interested members of the public, citizens of Wiesbaden and the region, representatives of cultural, educational and civic organisations, researchers, journalists, and everyone interested in Ukrainian history, migration, and European connections.

Why Pavlo Skoropadskyj?

At the center of the conference is Pavlo Skoropadskyj, one of the key figures in Ukrainian political and intellectual history of the early twentieth century, and an important representative of the Ukrainian diaspora in interwar Germany.

His biography offers a unique way to explore questions of Ukrainian state-building, exile, migration, and transnational connections in a broader European context.

It is especially meaningful that Skoropadskyj was born in Wiesbaden, making the city a point of connection between Ukrainian, German, and European history.

What is the conference about?

The conference aims to make knowledge about Ukrainian migration, exile, and diaspora accessible to a wider public and to civil society actors.

Some of the key goals are:

  • to present Ukrainian state-building and exile experiences as part of European history
  • to highlight diaspora as a space of continuity, resilience, and institution-building
  • to support civic initiatives of the Ukrainian community in the region
  • to create an open and non-ideological space for reflection and dialogue
  • to encourage regional and interregional exchange

In the long term, we see this conference as a first step toward building a sustainable platform for dialogue and networking among Ukrainian organisations in the Rhine-Main region.
